Modes Sebagai Kepingan Puzzle

Bagi siswa2 cerdas yg baru awal2 belajar jazz, sering kali muncul pertanyaan "mengapa kita harus menggunakan modes?" "Bukankah dg menggunakan parent scale juga hasilnya sama saja?"

Misalnya begini; dalam progresi ii-V-I berikut; Dm7 - G7 - Cmaj7, pada awalnya siswa akan diajarkan untuk berimprovisasi menggunakan D dorian, G mixolydian , C ionian. Namun bukankah ketiga modes tersebut sama saja dg scale C mayor? Terus ngapain repot2 berpikir modes?

Benar bahwa ketiga modes tersebut adalah modes turunan dari C major cale, sehingga otomatis ketiga nya tersusun dari nada yg sama.

Namun lebih dalam lagi, pada tiap chord memiliki avoid note yg berbeda2, target note yg tidak sama, serta berragam voice leading yg menjadi penghubung antar chord. Identifikasi nada2 itu lebih praktis bila dijabarkan dg perspektif modes tiap chord dibanding menyatukan semuanya dlm kerangka pikir tonal C mayor.

Kemudian, pada pelajaran2 selanjutnya, kepada siswa akan diperlihatkan bahwa progresi chord dlm jazz itu mirip dg puzzle. Setiap chord sering dilepas kemudian diganti dg chord lain.

Misalnya; progresi ii-V-I yg tadi Dm7-G7-Cmaj7, sering kali chord V diganti altered menjadi Dm7-G7b9-Cmaj7.

Dalam kasus ini tidak bisa lagi menggunakan D dorian - G mixo - C ionian. Karena dlm chord G7b9 menggunakan nada Ab sementara G mixo menggunakan nada A.

Kemudian dicarilah scale lain yg memiliki kandungan nada Ab dan ketemu dg G half whole diminished (ini hanya satu contoh. masih banyak kemungkinan lain yg memiliki kandungan nada Ab)

Maka dari itu, puzzle yg tadi tersusun dari kepingan D dorian - G mixo - C ionian (ketiganya sama dg C major scale), kita ganti dg D dorian - G half whole diminished - C ionian (ketiganya tidak sama dg C major scale).

Jika siswa sejak awal tidak dibiasakan berpikir modes, maka akan kesulitan ketika pada level2 selanjutnya harus memodivikasi puzzle tersebut.

Ya,dia Ulrich Roth,atau lebih banyak dikenal dengan nama Uli Jon Roth. Gitarist yang berasal dari Jerman ini merupakan salah satu pencetus awalnya genre #NEO_CLASICAL_METAL. Dan dia salah satu guitarist yang men...jadi inspirasi gitarist2 besar dunia Seperti Yngwie Malmsteen,Steve Vai,Joe Satriani,Marty Friedman,Kirk Hammet,Eddie Van Hallen,Dave Mustaine,Jason Becker dan masih banyak lagi guitarist yang ter-influence sama nih orang.
Entah apa yang dia lakukan sma gitarnya,tapi dia bisa menjadikan gitarnya bersuara seperti layaknya biola,sngguh seperti suara biola.ckckck... Ada yang beda dengan design gitarnya. Yaitu SKY guitar.Gitarnya ditamabah fret menjadi 27 frets,untuk menjangkau nada tinggi biola. Sekilas gitarnya hanya memakai 1 pickup humbucker. Tapi ternyata dia memakai pickup neck juga yg d sembunyikan d bawah fret k 24. Dan itu merupakan kelebihan dari permainan dan teknik Uli. Belum ada guitarist yang bisa seperti dia kayaknya.
